HYPNOTHERAPY FAQ

When I am hypnotised, how am I going to feel? Will I know what is going on? Will I be asleep?

You definitely will not be asleep or unconscious. If you were asleep, you would not be able to hear the hypnotist. During hypnosis you are highly aware of what is going on around you, yet you are in a very relaxed and pleasant state. Hypnosis is best described as a heightened state of consciousness, an altered state of awareness. During hypnosis, the person stays in complete control and should they feel uncomfortable during the experience, they can always reopen their eyes and terminate the intervention. Everyone at some point or another has experienced hypnosis. One experiences hypnosis when one misses an exit while driving or when one is so absorbed watching TV or diving into a book that even a person talking will not distract you.

Although some hypnotists use the word sleep as a suggestion to enter deep relaxation, hypnosis is not sleep. Sleep is defined as a "natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored." During sleep, the individual is not aware of what is happening.

Is Hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is 100% safe when a experienced and competent hypnotherapist practices it.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is a term derived from the Greek word “hypnos”, meaning “sleep”. Hypnosis is very relaxing. However, you never lose awareness during hypnosis. When you are hypnotized, you continue to be aware of your surroundings. Everyone has experienced hypnosis. For example, you may be watching a commercial that you have seen many times and you find yourself very engrossed in it to the point that should a fly land on your nose you will feel lethargic and give yourself plenty of time to decide if you want it away from you. Daydreaming is also a hypnotic state.

Is hypnotherapy in your office like hypnosis on stage? Will you make me dance like a chicken?

Hypnosis, as used in a therapists office, is a healing or analytical process. The client's wellbeing is the sole focus of the procedure and the work is geared towards helping the client. No tests are done in hypnotherapy. The Hypnotherapist doesn't even touch the client. Stage hypnosis is a show where people perform acts that are used to entertain an audience. The purpose of the show is to entertain the audience and enthral them with hypnosis. The therapy is not a show of any sort. It is a very personal, confidential session.

Will I recall anything when the session is over?

The biggest misconception with hypnosis is that you will be “out”! The truth is you will recall everything. This is normal. You may be asked to explain little things you see or small feelings you sense as they come to you. The import part is that, without you knowing it, all the suggestions that Stef has given you will be recorded in your unconscious mind.

What can happen to me when the session is over?

There is a good chance that after the session is over and in the days to come, images or memories will surface suddenly to your consciousness. These images could be disturbing (only in rare cases), but remember you can always call your hypnotist.

What if I do not come out of hypnosis?

Everyone comes out of hypnosis. You went into hypnosis freely. So, just as you decided to go into hypnosis, so you will decide to come out of it. There are, on some, some people who enjoy it so much that they resist coming out. But all hypnotists have many different ways to bring the person around. If the hypnotist’s voice is no longer heard, (like if anything happens to the hypnotist during the session) the person will return to consciousness.

Can I bring a friend with me?

Of course. You can bring anyone with you if that makes you comfortable.

Is one asleep or unconscious while under hypnosis?

During hypnosis, one appears asleep but is not. One is calm, but mentally alert. The person is always aware of the direct surroundings.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Everyone can be hypnotized as long as they want to be. Anyone who wants to be hypnotized can be. Even people with short attention spans can be hypnotized.

Concentration is essential for hypnosis. People with a wide range of intellectual giftedness or limitations can be hypnotized. Even children as young as three can be. Aged people can also be. Hypnosis is like riding a bicycle - you more you do it, the better you get at it. Some people take longer than others to be hypnotised, but anyone can be.

What if I can not go deeply enough?

A light hypnotic state may be sufficient to accomplish the goals of the session. Most people can achieve a trance deep enough to allow for the process. Hypnosis is one of many tools and techniques used to uncover information or to work out problems.

Can a person fabricate experiences while under hypnosis?

Hypnosis is not a truth test. There is no certainty that all knowledge obtained under hypnosis is accurate. Hypnosis can bring back information that has been subdued or forgotten.
